Dan’s Legacy Foundation wins $10,500 Donation from 100WomenVan

September 16, 2019

100 Women Who Care Vancouver (aka 100WomenVan) members were encouraged by the grassroots work Dan’s Legacy Foundation does in our community to help at-risk youth and chose them to receive a $10,500 donation at tonight’s meeting at Steamworks Brew Pub in Gastown.

Barbara Coates, Executive Director of Dan’s Legacy Foundation shared how the organization was founded in memory of a young man who, after surviving sexual abuse as a teenager, self-medicated with hard drugs in an attempt to numb the psychological pain of the traumatic experience. He received help from substance abuse recovery programs on two occasions, but did not have access to essential one-to-one therapy. Tragically, Dan relapsed, overdosed and died. He was 19.

Dan’s Legacy Foundation provides counselling, education, vocational, life-skills and other supporting programs designed to empower youth to achieve their full potential and contribute to their community. Since 2014 they’ve helped over 400 youth meet their educational, housing and life-goals.

100WomenVan is a group of 100+ like-minded women coming together to make a positive a change in their community. They support local non-profit and charitable organizations in Vancouver’s Lower Mainland. All organizations are nominated and voted on by the membership at the hour-long quarterly meetings. Members commit to writing a $100 cheque on the spot and the selected charity walks away with $10,000 + dollars – not bad for a 5 minute presentation!

Dan’s Legacy Foundation provides therapeutic counselling and life-skills intervention programs to youth affected by mental health challenges, including depression, anxiety, sleeping and eating disorders and self- medicating issues, resulting from childhood trauma and abuse. Working one-on-one with clients who are referred through a variety of channels.
