On May 1st, the team at Dan’s Legacy came together to participate in a workshop that aimed to broaden our collective understanding of the LGBTQ2S+ community.
Dan’s Legacy has benefited from increased financial support over the past year and as a result, we have been able to serve more clients. Roughly 20% of the youth that seek the support we offer via our trauma-informed counselling and wrap around programs identify as being a part of the LGBTQ2S+ community.
With this in mind, we wanted to develop our resources and competencies on the subject so we can improve our quality of care and become even more inclusive. The first step towards achieving this goal was to arrange a workshop that would help support our team of Outreach Workers and Social Workers by:
- Increasing their understanding of diverse sexualities, genders, and the intersectionality that exists among them.
- Observing actions and attitudes within our workplace and community.
- Discussing Conflict Transformation strategies related to sexuality and gender (e.g. misgendering, deadnaming, etc.)
- Exploring the basics of bystander intervention, implicit bias, and the importance of representation through a queer-focused but intersectional lens.
Qmunity, a leading organization in this space, responded to our request for support and delivered a thought-provoking and insightful workshop. The 2-hour session got the entire team at Dan’s Legacy discussing a variety of topics that will serve as a base to build from as we look to continue our efforts to provide a safe space to as many clients as possible.
